Martin Peter Matheson Obituary
Martin Peter 'Pete' Matheson, of Yakima, died Saturday morning, August 12, 2017 in a tragic climbing accident.
Pete was born May 24, 1961 in Chicago, IL to Martin and Helen Matheson. One of five siblings, Pete spent his early years in Harvard, IL. He went on to attend the University of Illinois, graduating with a degree in animal science. He was also a proud ex-member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
Pete began his career in road construction as a laborer for Kenny Construction while still in college. After stints in Illinois and Virginia, he took a job in Reno, NV as a project estimator in 1989 for Granite Construction. With his outstanding work ethic and drive, Pete was quickly promoted to the position of Area Manager in Ogden, UT. After eight years in Utah, his career with Granite continued to escalate. Known for his ability to successfully manage new business endeavors, in 2007 Pete was selected to oversee the development of Granite's Yakima Washington branch and soon after Granite's entire Northwest Region. Following many successes in the northwest region Pete was promoted to Granite Senior Vice President and Group Manager in 2013-- overseeing all California operations. Although he traveled to California each week for work, Pete called Yakima home.
Pete was larger than life. To know him was to love him. Pete loved nothing more that gathering his friends and family around a smoking grill, seasoning everything with special 'Pete Spice.' Whether feeding family and friends his mouthwatering creation, lending a hand at the drop of a hat, or inspiring the next generation, Pete was a loyal and remarkable friend to all. The ultimate entertainer and storyteller, he lit up a room.
He was also an avid and experienced hiker, having summitted many of the peaks in the northwest, including Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Rainier. When not exploring the wonders of the Pacific Northwest, Pete could be found working in his garden, 'encouraging' friends and employees to make sausage, or following his boys wherever their passions took them. Whether it was competing in hockey, cross-country, or track, Pete was always their biggest fanthe loudest in the standsand so proud of their accomplishments.
For Pete, there could be no one better suited than the love of his life, Donna. Even after 27-years of marriage, no one could question that the spark was as strong as ever.
Pete is survived by his wife, Donna, and sons, Joe and Will.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 9th, 2017, 4pm at the Harman Center in Yakima (101 N. 65th Ave, Yakima, WA 98908). Memorials may be made payable to Yakima County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue c/o Brookside Funeral Home PO Box 1267, Moxee WA 98936.
