Local Army Lieutenant Seeks Large Amount For Alleged Theft of Story
Lieut. John Hopper of This City Charges DeMille Took His Tale from Magazine to Create “Dress Parade”—Wrote Story While Cadet at West Point

Contending that a story he wrote while a cadet at West Point was stolen by the De Mille Picture corporation to make the plot of the successful motion picture “Dress Parade,” Lieut. John Hopper, U.S.A., stationed at Fort Hancock, N.Y., son of Mrs. Margaret E. Hopper of 18 Hollister Street, this city, has sued the corporation and others in federal court in New York for $1,000,000.

Hopper declared that shortly before his graduation from the military academy in 1927 he sold a serial story entitled, “Recognition,” to a popular priced magazine. Later he said, “Dress Parade,” was produced using his story almost identically. In addition to the damages he claims to have sustained, the lieutenant asks an injunction against further showings of the picture and an accounting of all profits from it.

    Football Player
Lieut. Hopper, who is the son of Mrs. Margaret Hopper, was graduated from Pittsfield High School and from that institution went to West Point. While at the academy he was active in various branches. He was a member of the champion intramural football team of 1923, of the hockey squad in 1923–24, of the lacrosse squad in 1924 and the champion lacrosse team of 1925. Hopper qualified as a rifle sharpshooter and pistol marksman in 1925. Also in that year he was appointed a cadet corporal and was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1926. He was successful as associate editor of the Howitzer in 1926 and 1927. He was collaborator in the composition of the lyrics for the 1926 Hundredth Night show.

He was married to Miss Doris Elizabeth Brattig in August, 1925. They are the parents of a daughter, born here in April.
