Grace Elizabeth Haig, nee Matheson (1923-2009) - Obituary (The Daytona Beach News-Journal, Daytona Beach, Florida, Wednesday, August 26, 2009) Haig, Grace E. — Grace was born Grace Elizabeth Matheson in Chicago, IL on May 31, 1923. Her parents were Martin Matheson of Norway and Mary Bevillaqua of Seattle, WA.
At the onset of the Great Depression her father moved the family to a farm in south Texas. Grace had the best years of her life on the farm roughhousing with brothers, Red and Paul and sister, Margie. She would tell you great stories of these times if she could … stories told with laughter and great light that would make you wish you had been there.
Grace went to New York City about 1940, where she worked with NBC writing radio scripts. In 1941, she worked for Air America Supply Agency, where she met her future husband, John T. (Jack) Hopper. Late in 1941, her brothers, Red and Paul and fiancée, Jack went to war. Her mother, Mary was proud to have two stars in her window. All returned safely and Grace and now Colonel John Hopper were married on December 15, 1945.
Grace and Jack moved to Washington, D.C. where both worked for the Eisenhower election campaigns. Grace gave birth to daughter, Gracie in 1950, Bridget in 1953, John in 1958 and Thomas in 1963. Grace relocated to Chapel Hill, NC in 1967.
After her husband’s death in 1970, she married again to Professor Robert Haig in 1972. During this time Grace was editor of Electronics of America, a weekly newsletter sold in over 80 countries. Grace also served as Vice-Chairman of the Orange County Republican Party. Grace relocated to Ormond Beach in 1982. She was employed by Daytona Beach Community College, where she helped raise over a million dollars for the foundation. Grace also received a degree from DBCC at age 67.
After retiring, she traveled, read and enjoyed the company of her dog, Lucky and her dog, C.J. Grace died peacefully at Florida Hospital on August 21 with her children, Grace West, Bridget Zelnik, John Hopper and Thomas Hopper and sister, Mrs. Marjorie Kade at her side. Her doctor said she had only a 10 percent use of her heart … which wouldn’t surprise anyone who knew her … she gave the other 90 percent to her friends and family.
