William A. "Jack" Davenport Jr. of Salinas died of heart failure Saturday at Hospice House in Monterey. He was 75.
Mr. Davenport was a native of Monterey and a lifelong resident of Salinas. He attended local schools, graduated from Pacific Grove High School and graduated from San Jose State University.
He worked as a police officer in Monterey, served in the Army and took part in the Battle of the Bulge in France. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He later served in the Army reserves, retiring with the rank of major.
He was a California Highway Patrol officer for 14 years. Mr. Davenport was Monterey County sheriff from 1962 to 1979. He taught classes in traffic safety to civic and social organizations and schools.
Mr. Davenport shot pistols competitively for many years, representing both the California Highway Patrol and the 6th Army teams. He enjoyed piaying golf at Corral de Tierra Golf and Country Club, fishing and hunting. He was a past president of the California State Sheriffs Association. He was a member of the Monterey Paisaino Club, Carmel Masonic Temple for more than 50 years and the Kiwanis Club of Monterey, along With many Other Clubs and professional organizations.
Mr. Davenport is survived by his wife, Janet Davenport of Salinas; his son, W.A. "Jack" Davenport III of
Salinas and Bakersfield; his sister, Beatrice DeAmaral of Carmel Highlands; two granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cypress Community Church off Highway 68 at Corral de Tierra. Burial will be at Monterey City Cemetery.
Following burial, a reception will be held at the Monterey County Sheriff's Posse Grounds in Salinas. Arrangements are under the direction of The Paul Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity. |
