Mathison Friends of Roy Mathison, 19-year-old Pacific Grove youth who died suddenly last Thursday of pneumonia, thronged the Paul Mortuary chapel yesterday afternoon to pay him a last tribute. Members of Monterey Peninsula chapter, DeMolay, conducted the service according to the impressive ritual of their order. Most of those who crowded the chapel were young people, friends and classmates of young Mathison during his days at Pacific Grove high school. Following the DeMolay service the Rev. Edward M. Sharp of the Monterey Presbyterian church made an address in praise of the lad. "Roy was known throughout Pacific Grove and the entire peninsula for his lovable disposition." Rev. Sharp said. "He was a worthy son of whom his parents may well be proud. Industrious, courageous, with a winning personality, he would have traveled far along the road to success, had he been spared." Following the service at the chapel, a procession of more than 50 cars proceeded to El Carmelo Cemetery where Roy was laid to rest beneath the sheltering branches of a huge cypress. Young Mathidson leaves his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mathison, and six brothers and sisters: Morris, Kay, Peter, Thelma, Myrtle and Marie. Copyright (c) 2009 The Monterey County Herald
