Selvbiografi Autobiography of Rhoda Camilla Hanson Manley Brett
I was the third child of Peter M. Hanson and Mathilda Livingston born on the Cornelius Livingston farm home about nine miles northwest of Canby, Minnesota, in Lac Qui Parle County.

My mother, being of sturdy Norwegian ancestry, had prepared for my coming by scrubbing a hardwood kitchen floor, setting a batch of bread in the oven, and caring for my two older sisters, Merriam and Lyda. I saw the first light of this world on May 6, 1912. My christening took place at the little Florida Lutheran Church on June 3, 1912, where my parents were members. I should like to take the reader back for a general idea of this farm home as to furnishings of that day in contrast to our own (Depending solely upon my memory, it is a somewhat loose description).

I recall the old kerosene lamp on the wall in the kitchen with the reflector, the wooden telephone on the east wall in the kitchen and the three rings, the separator room off the kitchen and the old pantry with its granite churn, coffee grinder, and vinegar jug. On the table in the front
room was a gas lamp with a pretty green shade and mantles which was used only when company came in or for the Farmers Club meetings. I especially remember the fertilizer hauled in every fall around the foundation of the house to keep it warmer through the extreme winters in
Minnesota. On cold wintry nights before retiring for bed, it was handy to sneak out there rather than going all the way to the outhouse!

One day, as a toddler, I came into the house completely drenched. It was apparent that I had fallen into Florida Creek nearby and had rescued myself.

When I was seven years of age, my father gave my sisters and me each a lamb to feed with a bottle and nipple. We named them Bess, Molly, Bill and Dick. One morning on the way to country school in the late fall, we found my lamb, Bill, frozen to death on the snow-covered, plowed field. Losing this pet was the first tragedy of my life.

Every fall, the farmers made ready for threshers to come in, and the anticipation of the crew coming to our place was always exciting. We watched our chance to crawl into the feed box behind the hayracks and ride. We loved to play in the fresh straw and climb the straw stacks.
One harvest season, our hired girl, “Becca” Vollum, climbed to the top of a fresh stack; fell through, and had to be rescued by the farm hand with a pitch fork.

My father’s farm was large with quite a number of out-buildings. The one that impressed me the most was the tall silo made of wood and supported by heavy steel rings, which stood behind the barn. Strong windstorms would quite frequently blow these silos down in the area – ours, too. They were later replaced by cement silos. Little did we suspect that 50 years hence hippies would be living in silos!

My father had quite a number of working horses, among them, Netz and Dick. In addition, he had Old Queen, a pet riding horse, and old Jim with the big foot. One day I went horseback riding against my father’s will. Upon reaching the clearing in the pasture west of the barn and imagining my father could see me from the Jimmy Hanson place during threshing time, I jerked the bridle; the horse turned abruptly under a low-hanging tree branch brushing me off! The fall resulted in a broken wrist! Moral from this experience: disobedience does not pay!
